Bambu Lab printers have taken over UK D&T departments in the last two years for one simple reason: they're fast, reliable and easy enough that non-specialist teachers can run them without a CAD background. Bambu Lab A1 — the entry-level option
The A1 is Bambu's open-frame bed-slinger printer. It's fast, has automatic bed levelling, and pairs with the AMS Lite for multi-colour printing.
For schools, the open frame is the main drawback. It's harder to risk-assess for use with younger pupils, and the printer is noisier in a classroom than the enclosed models. Best as a club / lunchtime printer or for primary schools where it lives in a staff-only print room.
Bambu Lab P1S — the school workhorse

Bambu Lab X1 Carbon — for sixth form and serious D&T
The X1 Carbon adds a hardened nozzle (so it can print engineering materials like carbon-fibre filled nylon), LIDAR-based first-layer inspection, and a more refined enclosure. It's a noticeable step up in reliability for unattended overnight printing.
It's overkill for most KS3 work, but for A-level Product Design, BTEC Engineering, or schools running an after-hours maker space, the X1's reliability and material range justify the price difference.
Safety and risk-assessment in a UK school
The P1S and X1 both have an enclosed chamber, a door interlock (paused if opened mid-print), and built-in air filtration (activated carbon as standard, HEPA on the X1). That ticks the main boxes for a UK school risk assessment.
Always site the printer on a stable surface in a ventilated room (not a cupboard). Avoid printing ABS without the HEPA filter and good ventilation — for most school use, PLA and PETG are the safer and more practical choices.
Buying as a UK school
